When Otus began, our aim was straightforward yet ambitious—to improve how educators, families, and students connect and interact with essential data, helping us understand and support each student’s unique needs. Reflecting on my days as a 7th-grade social studies teacher, the fragmentation of student information was evident and cumbersome. Data was scattered—grades, assessments, behavior tracking all kept separately, creating silos that were inefficient and obstructive. The shift towards 1:1 devices, rather than simplifying, only added layers of complexity with an increase in apps and tools that demanded more attention, pulling focus from where it mattered most: the students.


This firsthand experience fueled the inception of Otus. From day one, our mission has been to not just provide tools, but to ensure these tools made educational processes easier, not more burdensome. This mission has guided our integration of AI into Otus, ensuring that our technological advancements directly address the real, daily challenges faced by educators.


In 2016, we envisioned AI as a potential teaching assistant for K-12 educators, akin to the support that college professors receive from their TAs. This support would range from grading assistance to data analysis and direct student support. Initially, the technological landscape made this vision seem ambitious at best. Discussions with experts and AI pioneers highlighted the limitations in cost, accuracy, and practical implementation.

Our approach to AI is rooted in the robust, structured data we’ve built into Otus over the years. By integrating data from SISs, classroom assessments, attendance, and more, our platform delivers accurate, real-time insights that empower educators to make informed decisions in a way that no other tool can provide. This structured approach not only boosts accuracy but also ensures transparency and equity in every decision. Security and ethics are integral to our design—our tools are built to keep data anonymous and secure while ensuring precise, reliable insights. Our carefully structured database guarantees that the right answers are generated without compromising student privacy.


Talk about a journey. This was our timeline as we created Otus AI


2013

Otus CEO Andy Bluhm and President & Co-Founder Chris Hull began exploring how machine learning and data could address educators’ challenges. Their early work laid the foundation for our vision of empowering teachers with real-time insights.


2014

We connected with experts at the University of Pennsylvania, sparking early discussions that informed our data-driven approach to transforming education.


2015

The Otus AI domain was established, and early conversations with leaders like Deborah Quazzo helped shape our perspective on leveraging AI in education.


2017

Collaborations with the University of Chicago provided valuable insights into predicting student outcomes with AI-driven data. This year also marked the beginning of our partnership with AWS, which has ensured a reliable, scalable foundation for our AI efforts.


2018

Our network expanded through engagements with Google and Stanford University, further exploring the possibilities of AI in education.


2019

Our work with Harvard deepened our understanding of data-driven personalization in learning, while partnerships with Narrative Science and Northwestern University allowed us to explore generating personalized “performance stories” and uncovering new insights from our data.

 

2020
Discussions with Microsoft’s head of AI opened fresh perspectives on cutting-edge technology, reinforcing our commitment to responsible innovation.


2021

We evaluated new support solutions with Capacity and explored additional machine learning applications with partners like JoeZoo to further enhance our offerings.


2022

Guidance from thought leader Charles Martin spurred ideas on virtual assistance. Then, on November 30, the release of ChatGPT marked a turning point in public AI access.


2023

Otus launched its AI-powered question generator, a key step in streamlining assessment creation and driving data-informed decision-making.


2024

We assembled a dedicated team to research and shape Otus AI. With expert input from Associate Professor Ethan Mollick of the Wharton School and the formation of an Otus AI advisory board, we continue to refine our responsible AI strategy—ensuring our tools remain ethical, transparent, and exceptionally accurate.


2025

Otus launched its AI-powered assistant, Insights, which gives teachers a clearer picture of student performance and streamlines daily tasks.

We See the Future of AI in Otus

We continue to see a transformative future for AI in education, one that enhances rather than replaces the vital role of teachers. Our goal with AI in Otus is to give educators more time to spend with their students and a deeper understanding of their unique needs. For example, Otus AI Insights is designed to distill key insights from assessments and student performance data, assisting educators by quickly identifying trends so they can focus on areas important for student growth. Additionally, our application of natural language processing in AI for Education allows educators to easily create custom reports, assessments, and learning plans. By simply typing their requirements into the Otus AI tool, teachers can efficiently manage their workload and focus their energies on nurturing their students’ educational journeys, and ensuring that every child receives the attention they need to succeed.
